On their blog, thatgamecampany announced that they’d raised enough money to really step up their next game project. The creators of the much-touted Flower & Journey, thatgamecompany was previously partnered with Sony. But after having gotten off to a good start with their first three games, they’ve fulfilled their contract & have since branched out into self-publishing. And although they haven’t announced which consoles their latest creation will be available on, hopefully it’ll be available on at least the PS4 & XB1.
I’d been unaware, but apparently thatgamecompany’d had financial trouble during the development of Journey, basically spending all of their budget & going bankrupt. Fortunately for them (& us) they more than recouped their expenses. Now working on their own, they’ve been able to raise $7 million through a partnership with Capital Today & other eager investors. This was enough to enter the next phase of development.
“With this new investment, our studio is able to scale up development efforts to focus on making the best game possible in the same spirit as flOw, Flower, and Journey. We’ll also begin laying the infrastructure to self-publish, market, and distribute on our own terms for this next project and beyond.”
As for the actual game itself, there’s no solid information just yet. I suspect it’s still in very early development. To put things in perspective, they’re still hiring for the project on their site. The only information I have is that it’ll be in line with thatgamecompany’s previous works. The developer site claims it’ll be a “beautiful & moving experience.” Many veterans from the studio’s previous games are involved in this project, including creative director Jenova Chen.
I’m looking forward to more information being released. It’s nice to see studios succeed & build up a good reputation so they can go it on their own. Hopefully that reputation will help the title make a successful cross-console jump.
But seriously, release Journey on the PS4 already.
